All About Dating & Sex

"What is 'gender identity and expression'?"

I keep hearing about ‘gender identity and expression,’ but I’m afraid to appear foolish and ask my friends what it means. Can you help?

These two related terms have become part of the LGBT lexicon in the past decade. Distinct from one’s sexual orientation (gay, straight, bisexual), gender identity is about a person’s emotional and psychological sense of being male or female and is not always the same as the sex assigned him or her at birth. For instance, a straight man may be a cross-dresser or otherwise appear feminine, as might a gay man. In either case, the person’s gender identity (in this case female) is different from their sexuality (straight, gay, or bi). Gender expression goes hand in hand with gender identity and refers to how we communicate our gender—sometimes with a combination of maleness and femaleness—through our clothing, mannerisms, hairstyles, way of speaking, and first names.
