"The terms 'husband' and 'wife'"

I don’t see why gay people can’t use the terms ‘husband’ and ‘wife’ even when they’re not married by law. Am I concerning myself too much with word choice?

I don’t think you can ever be too concerned about word choice. In fact, more and more LGBT couples are using “husband” and “wife” to refer to their partners—whether legal or not. Still, some gay couples just aren’t used to the moniker. A lesbian friend of mine who married her lover in Massachusetts put it this way: “We’re just of a generation that prefers to use ‘partner.’ I think the more we hear it from other gay couples, the more likely we’ll be to start calling each other ‘the wife.’
