All About Coming Out

"Can I share the news that my son came out?"

My college-age son recently came out to me. While the news came as a surprise, I’m very supportive of him. I’d like to share this with close family and friends, but I wonder if that’s okay.

No, it’s not okay to mention it—unless you get your son’s approval. There are many degrees of outness: For instance, some teens are out to their parents, but not at school; others are out at school, to their closest friends and online, but not at home; while still others are fully out. In this case, ask your son directly if he minds your telling family and friends: “How would you like me to handle what you’ve told me?” Then, follow his suggestion.
